Historians should be required to take a module on logic.

As an undergraduate, I took a module on Aristotelian logic. At the time, I mocked the course’s content mercilessly.

If A, then B.

A.

Therefore

B.

It was all too simple.

Yet, so many of my students are unable to explain the logic of their arguments within the context of their written assessments. They (usually) have solid evidence and reasoning behind their assertions, but are wholly unaware of how to organise these in a persuasive and logical manner.
